Introduction

Water and Environmental Engineering (WEEN) deals primarily with engineering systems, and facilities that are basic to human communities, industry and commerce. The planning, design, construction and operation of water conveyance systems, water and sewerage treatment facilities, dams, water and air pollution management systems, solid waste management systems and other major art-facts of the society are activities of water and environmental engineering.
Water and environmental engineers are major contributors to the solution of problems of urbanization, city planning and environmental quality control. A flourishing national population and the desire of people to cluster in urban areas
requires a great increase in the number of well-prepared engineers who can meet the basic needs of society with efficiency, economy and safety. Water and environmental engineers when well-prepared are better placed to provide
solutions to the management of the ever diminishing water resources and the pollution of the environment by industries, human settlements and ecological disasters like oil spills. This Programme shall enhance the National Programmes to provide water to all households, cleaner environment, alleviating poverty by the year 2016 and industrialization by 2030.
